Pension Action Days - January 3 and 4

Active and retired state employees from across the state are set to rally in Springfield to fight the push to undermine our pensions.  We Are One Illinois coalition has organized two action days on Thursday, January 3 and Friday, January 4 at the Illinois Statehouse.  Demonstrations are planned in two shifts on both days along with a rally in the Rotunda at noon; the morning shift is from 9:30am - 1pm, and the afternoon shift is from 11:30am - 4pm.  Anyone who is able to attend is encouraged to do so.

A schedule of events can be found at the AFSCME Council 31 website:

Governor Pat Quinn is pressing the General Assembly to act on his plan to weaken the public pension system during the early January session.  His proposal would change the way the annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) is calculated, which would drastically reduce the benefits to retirees.  This plan would also raise the retirement age and require higher employee contributions.  An additional provision seeks to shift the burden of teacher pensions to local property taxes.

The We Are One coalition has found serious faults with Gov. Quinn's plan and has released a report of its findings.  The coalition has submitted an alternative plan that protects pensions while addressing the core of the problem: the State's continued fiscal irresponsibility and unreliability.  You can view a summary of the proposal here, which focuses on closing corporate tax loopholes.

Whether or not you can attend the rally, it is important to contact your legislators now.  A Talking Points document on corporate tax loopholes has been created, downloadable here.  Also, We Are One Illinois has a Fact Sheet available on public pensions.

You can look up your legislator or use AFSCME's "click-to-call" tool to contact your legislators.
